So, if you've been a gamemaster before, what's your planning style like?  Do you ever bother, or do you just make it all up as you go along?  What style do you think works best?

I've never been part of a serious group of RPers, so whenever I would gamemaster it would be totally improv.  I would have like to have planned things out more, but I never had the time.

i've never been a gamemaster, but my old GM used to infuse both the book and his own imagination. he'd spend a huge amount of time planning it out. weeks to months.

I spent a lot of time building the most basic outlines of hundreds of people, places, and things in my world...

But when it came down to crunch time, I was making up most of the details as play progressed.

I was always trying to plan ahead, for the general adventure, detail of the story up ahead, dungeon and encounter, for the rest it was always what my player came up with and I was playing along, after all you could never think all they could think about, those little ...

but it always been lot of fun!  XD

I tend to be a heavy planner, anymore, as anyone who read the series I did on Diceless Adventures can probably tell.  My planning sessions are typically several days long, but that's exaggerated by the fact that most of the adventures I run now are in a tabletop RPG game and setting that I'm creating and never every adventure requires the creation of new content.

Where I have such content ready ahead of time, I can plan in a much shorter of time, usually just a couple of days.

I've tried more open adventures before with plain-old seat-of-the-pants gamemastering, but that doesn't really seem to be my strength.

You forgot the option "I'm so terrible a gamemaster you have to read a premade one from a book"

That one fits me perfect...even though I did some planning for the one I did I mostly winged the details.

You're right... I forgot entirely about precreated adventures... probably because I've never used one.  I played in one once though... didn't go too bad actually.

I'd add the option, but these polls can't be edited once posted.  Too bad...

I plan it out, but wing it for alot of things.  If the characters are introduced to the hook, and decide to go the other way instead, I don't stop them.  If they decide to ignore the hook entirely, I don't prevent them from doing so.

So the answer is, I plan it out relatively, but then fly by the seat of my pants for a lot of it.  If the characters never end up finding the flaming sword, then they don't find the flaming sword, which secretly is going to be the most effective weapon for any upcoming encounters that *ARE* pre-planned, like going through a swamp full of marsh zombies.
