The release of Final Fantasy XII is still over a month away.  RPGamer shares its views on the latest from Square Enix.  Will FFXII be lost in the hype at the end of the year, or will it lead the way?

I seriously doubt FF12 will be lost in the hype. I'll definitely get it.

Yeah, I agree.  Seeing how the FFXII collector's edition has been in Gamestop's top five slot ever since Gamestop started accepting pre-orders I'd say it wasn't being overlooked at all.

Glad to hear it's got that same "hard to put down" quality of the other titles.

I'm excited. Although maybe I shouldn't be with this backlog of games...Okami, BKII, VP2, XSIII and not to mention the sidequests in Disgaea 2. I'll probably end up giving this some sort of VIP treatment and let it cut in line.

Hehe, blurbs aren't the easiest things to come up with, but at the same time, there is not one, but two consoles coming out this year.  A game might be forgotten... okay, maybe not Final Fantasy.. but something! ^^;

I can't wait for FF12. In fact, the second I lay my hands on my FF12 Collector's Edition case, there will probably be a glow of light and a chorus of angels.

I think that unless the disc is blank, it will be hard to not like this game.  I've got my Collector's Edition waiting for me at the end of October.  It does mean FFV and III are just going to wait until Christmas though.

I'll get it, of course. Played most of the other S/NES, PS1/2 ones, so...

A bit wary of the combat system, tho. The demo didn't do much to make
me like it, and I've always been more of a fan of the turn-based-ish, menu-driven,

total-control combat systems than the "action" ones. (Got my start on
the early Ultimas/Wizardrys/Bard's Tales)

Of course, that hasn't stopped me from enjoying Star Ocean, Secret of Mana, etc, so we'll see :)

Many who didn't like the demo actually liked the whole game, so I wouldn't be surprised if you turned out to be one of them ^_~

I have to wonder how people find Penny Arcade to be a source of anything but a tutorial on how not to be funny.

If you want to wander around and let the game fight for you, you can.  With the gambits taking care of "attack", "cure" etc. you can decide when to use the technicks, offensive spells, and items.  It's nice, because if you don't have something for them to do, you don't have to click 'attack' every single round. :)

Yeah, I bet those people are only judging FF12 by the demo, and haven't even played the whole game, and I think the only fair way to judge a game is to play it in its entirety. Personally, I don't think playing a game for a few hours is enough to get a good opinion since some games start off weak yet get better and vice versa.

Ive preordered it since August, even if the game is bad, i must complete  the Final Fantasy serie heh...... I  am sure the story will be great,  the only problem with the demo, it was too easy.

I don't believe playing a game in it's entirety is the only way to judge it, it's the best way, but not the only.

For one, you can get a general concept of the game mechanics within the first few minutes, tops a few hours. You get an idea of where the story is going, and how engaging it is 5-10 hours. Music, sounds, etc are all ambience anyway... so that does not actually matter. If within the first 10 hours something about the game isn't engaging to me, I will drop it because I have better things to play/do.

I played FFX for 20 hours before I decided it was a complete waste of my time. The story wasn't interesting, the battle/sphere system did not interest me, and I've watched people play further in the game to know I don't enjoy it.  If I beat it, would I have a different opinion? probably not except wanting more time of my life back.

You can judge a game within the first 15 hours, you may not be able to contest deeper aspects of story... but by that time you have a damn good idea of whether or not you like it, if it is worth your time, and can give a decent general review. If a game is weak for 15-20 hours, there is no way the rest of it is worth it. Usually the story or the battle has to be engaging, and 12 does not have engaging battle, so I certainly hope the story makes up for it.

(I've been generous with my given time frame)
