An entire galaxy is waiting to be discovered, but for now, RPGamer can only give you a couple of planets. What kind of potential lies in Rogue Galaxy?

I've had this pre-ordered for quite some time, but I'm actually beginning to doubt I'll enjoy it. It seemed great, and now it just seems okay. I guess I'm not really in the mood for a comedy RPG, or another ARPG for that matter. Ar Tonelico before this, easily.

I am curious about this game, and I hope it is a bit more sci-fi than Star Ocean 3 was. How good is the AI though? I`ve only been frustrated with AI-controlled allies in the games that use it this year (SO3, Devil Summoner, Kingdom Hearts 2, FFXII...)

I'm playing that as well, and so far RG is much better from a technical viewpoint. However, I need to play AT a lot more to see how good of a game it is.

I'm not sure how much I can say at this point (NDA), but the AI will stick to very simple preset commands. Part of the challenge is giving orders.

The AI is good enough since even on the go all out AI tactic they won't automatically use spells. But on this setting they will drain healing and attack battle items.

Instead the suggestion system is similar to pressing L1 in tales of the abyss. Meaning the suggestions box will often in battle list certain skills in mid battle. Simply Press R1/R2 during this time to force the AI to use a skill.

Else the AI will never automatically use a skill/spell. Yes though this game is 1 player only you can still manually control other other 2. However Jaster can never be set to a reserve party member slot.

Btw you  can manually take a reserve party member and replace him with the other 2 in battle party members that aren't Jaster.

AI partners are nice and all, but why on Earth are RPG makers afraid of making a game like Secret of Mana where my friends can grab controllers and jump into the storyline with me?

That kind of gameplay works well when you're connected by the net and everyone has their own screen, but if you're using a console on a single tv with two controllers, there are issues involved, most particularly that of your characters becoming separated.

Crystal Chronicles attempted to create a multiplayer RPG like that, but they put too much emphasis on the GBA connection and it failed, unfortunately.  Hopefully Chronicles for the Wii and DS will be better.

Also, the Tales series, for the most part, allows multi-player in battles.  Symphonia and Abyss can have their party members set to Manual or Semi-Auto so they can be controlled by controllers 2-4.  In battles it really isn't an issue at all, it's just in exploration modes that it becomes a problem.

How is that a problem is the game is third person?  There are tons of third person RPG's out there that work fine multiplayer, but they're all mindless, Diabloesque hack and slashes (like Champions of Norrath, X-men Legends, etc).  I want one of these story-based action RPG's like this, or hell even Kingdom Hearts where you get a handful of AI party members to just throw in the option to have someone play with you.  It's something that I don't think has even been tried before or since Secret of Mana and that kind of baffles me, since that was such a fun little feature of that game that people still talk about to this day.

Nah, I can see that being a major problem if the game has a fully rotatable camera like Rogue Galaxy does. X-Men Legends, Champions of Norrath, Dark Alliance games have more of a top-down view which is more user friendly for games that would allow for more than one player. I won't argue that it's good idea and I wish more action-RPGs really took that feature a little more seriously.

Anyway, Rogue Galaxy will probably be a refreshing change of pace for those who are just coming off of FFXII or who were disappointed by it.

What this game, or any other game that's coming out real soon, needs to have though, is a good plotline. An awesome story. That's what I want. I haven't been blown away since Digital Devil Saga 2, and that feels like ages ago.

So far, the story isn't that gripping. The battles and the comical characters keep things moving. Ar Tonelico has an even slower start. I'm hoping that the stories of both games get better. Stories that blow you away? Doubtful. Average to above average stories? Quite possible.

Neither (Rogue Galaxy nor Ar Tonelico) has a story that completely blew me away, but both are fair enough to move their games along.  (Admittedly, I didn't play all of Rogue Galaxy and will not be reviewing it.) That doesn't seem like what you're looking for though.

What's great about Ar Tonelico, at least, is how fun the story is.  The optional discussions with the Reyvateils combined with excellent presentation make that story--while not a plot to write down and tell to your kids--entertaining.  And again, I realize that doesn't seem like what you're looking for, but just giving a summarized assessment here.

Xenosaga III's plot blew me away in a way similar to DDS2, although, it was only because I didn't know what the hell was going on anymore.

While I do enjoy dark/mature stories, I don't mind if the story is lighthearted just as long as it's good storytelling. I rather enjoyed DQVIII's story even if it was by the books.

I'm still looking forward to this even though I'm suspecting the game won't quite meet the high standards I was initially expecting, but I think it'll still be a fun game.

As long as they mean sci-fi when they say sci-fi.

Not Star Ocean 3 "Hey it's sci-fi, but you'll be spending 99.9% percent of your time on a medieval backwater planet. But the other .01% is sci-fi, so we didn't technically completely and utterly lie to you."

"We're about to stage an attack on technology worthy of being chronicled in an anthem by Rush!"

Problem, of course, is when people wanna go separate ways.  Ah, I remember getting into huge arguments over what way to go in SoM. :)  Also, for a 3D game like Rogue Galaxy, the camera would have to be pulled quite far back for both players to have a comfortable moving space.  Of course, you could always make it split screen, but then you have issues with the system being able to render everything at a decent frame rate.
