Hi I am a new memeber and I just wanted to reply on something that was in this last colum. When the person asked about the abortion situation in Japan you replied that you did not know what it is over there. Well i have a friend who lives in America however he is a foreign exchange student from Japan and he said that most of Japan is a conservative country and that they are against abortion for the most part.

I knew that Japan was conservative, and I thought that maybe they'd be against it, but I don't know the legal status.  I believe that was as much his question as to the mindset.  Normally, I don't mind speculating, but I honestly didn't know anything for sure, so I'd rather admit that I didn't know than guess incorrectly.

Thanks for the info though.

I, for one, am glad that Japan is a slow-moving country. I love Japan so much because it's so different from us, so "westernization" doesn't sound great to me. Our culture now seems to look down on women who are "mere housewives" or "mere mothers". I see it as a very noble occupation, as only women can bring new life into the world, and are the best at nurturing it.

Men and women are equal, but they have different innate talents. Like in FFXI, Taru make the best mages, while other races make better warriors. They can do jobs they aren't innately suited for, but not as effectively. (It's worth noting I was a Taru WAR, hehe)

All this being said, I don't live in Japan so I don't really know what the culture is like... that's why I want to live there for a while. If women are treated disrespectfully, that's not good. But if it's just a matter of acknowledging different talents and abilities, I approve heartily.

Although I am a man, I grew up surrounded by women who delight the beauty of their gender, and don't try to outdo men at everything. I think it's better to be what you are, than to try and prove you're something that you're not.

Front Mission looks like fun. I've always watched the series, but never had the chance to play. So, so many great games out there, and yet so little time to play. Sigh...

It's not so much a recognizing of talent.  Much of Asia holds beliefs that women are to be below men.  Women are expected to stay at home because that is their duty.  They shouldn't want anything more than to stay at home with their children.  I believe that a 'good' housewife is not to walk with her husband, she should follow just slightly behind.  The role of women is changing becuase they no longer wish to be second-class citizens.  Legally, they have all the same rights, but they are still lacking in many social functions.

While many are boldly charging forward into that "progressive, bright future" with little regard for the consequences, many cling to anachronisms that have lived well past their time.  Meanwhile, the people in the middle are not numerous enough, not paying enough attention, or not vocal enough to lay out that more reasonable, middle road.

Part of the problem with this issue in particular is defining gender equality.  Is equal opportunity and respect enough, or must all societal metrics be equal?  Is that even reasonable to expect?  Should people be pushed or forced into roles they don't want to assume just to satisfy some unreasonable standard of equality?  How can we even determine when we reach a goal (gender equality, racial equality, and son on) when we define it only in the vaguest terms?  The term "equality" sparks much debate, but few answers of any substance.
