Well, the added number will be probably around ten, which isn't a bad number of additions. I don't agree with keeping in Shantotto and Gabranth, though (unless a proper hero and villain get added for XI and XII, respectively). Still, add in a Chaos Storyline will be useful, since it was kind of a chore to grind up the Chaos characters. Honestly, because of that, I didn't use them.

Seems rather common for fighting games to inject only a few new characters each time.

Oh, I'm glad they are keeping Gabranth and Shantotto, and I guarantee they will be adding at least a new character for each game to have both a Cosmos/Chaos character.
I feel Gabranth was more of the Golbez type.
I didn't particularly care for Vayne and wouldn't particularly care to see him in, now just need a Hero from XII (Which is rumoured to be Vaan)
I feel Gabranth fits perfectly fine as the XII villain, being the one who killed King Raminas and Reks. (another reason Vaan could fit in as the XII Hero)
And for XI, it's rather hard to choose someone from that that's considered a "proper hero", Shantotto is plenty heroine though in Windurst missions, Wings of the Goddess as well as various other things, so they just need to add a villain.
Also love that the Chaos side has a story mode, which I missed in the original Dissidia.

I'd be excited for this if I liked the first one.
I could never get past the cheesy "mash-up" feeling I got from the game. Plus the gameplay grew tiresome (for me) pretty quickly.

Hmmm... Tifa. Yeah, she fits... I wonder if Yuffie will be added too? She was fun... especially in Advent Children. Hmmm... who else could work in 2... Hmmm... well, there's Ultros from VI. He would be NASTY! Oh the pain he could cause... What about Leo from VI? I think he would be an excellent addition. Hmmm, Terra SHOULD be in there somewhere. As both human and Esper form. Have the Esper form be like a Super move or something. Hmmm, who else? Edge was a jerk from 4... I don't think he'd be very useful... FuSoYa might be... his magic could be VERY powerful and nasty to defeat opponents with. Chaos-like enemies you say? How about Atma? He was like Chaos. Not a major player, but he still could do some real damage. Any one of the dragons from FF 6 would qualify, even the strange undead thing Doom Gaze. Seifer would definitely qualify for a feasible villain, as would oh what's his name? The strange cross-dressing villain from 9? Damn it... been too long, I can't remember his name. If it's Chaos-like you want, nothing matches Ultimecia. The only thing would be that the battle would last two freaking forevers just to finish the fight. Too many forms, too many battles. WrexSoul. He could be there. From 6. The monster that tried to kill Cyan.

Assuming they keep the full cast of the original, she will be. Terra in Dissidia is just how you describe.
Well they haven't announced the full roster yet, and it sounds like there will be a lower tier of "support characters" that you call in to assist you in the fight. That should allow them to have more characters in the game.

Actually, the devs already revealed in interviews (and the new trailer makes it obvious) that all the characters from the first Dissidia will return, with "more than a handful" of new characters.
And the characters assist each other during the battles (there was a chart on how it goes in a Famitsu scan), so there are no supporting characters like you thought.
This game looks kinda cool from the trailer. Anyone finish the first game?
