FFXI folks, right here.

Live and let live, that's what I say. Anyone who can't understand that should be killed. It's a simple philosophy, but it's always worked well in my family.
listen to our backtrack! it is awesome and i argued with firemyst about dancers.
i fell asleep at the end but i think i heard enough to say that i've now played ffxi by affiliation.
It felt weird to have a backtrack about a game you were playing while doing the backtrack :P

I was looking forward to this backtrack as I rarely get the chance to hear about FFXI from the mouths of people I don't play FFXI with.
The only thing that bugged me... I could relate to so much throughout the backtrack, with the exception that when Noodle's WHM got teased about DNC and all, I wondered what FFXI you all have been playing! DNC can heal a bit, but the primary thing that limits DNC as a healer is the cooldown timer on waltzes--each cure and its erase waltz all share the same timer, and DNC's erase timer is especially limiting. I certainly don't see it threatening WHM's status as top-dog healer. DNC is a very versatile job though, and can do a lot more than some people give it credit for. But main healing... I dunno, man. I'd much rather have a WHM!
And that's why I think SE actually loves WHM a lot. It's a job that's pretty firmly planted in its role and not really threatened by other jobs, not in Abyssea anyway. In older content I could see it, but not in abyssea. And SE keeps giving it new toys (JAs, job traits, new spells) that make its healing even more efficient. Unless they give more mages higher cures or split up DNC's waltz timers, WHM has little to fear.
If Noodle were a PLD of course, then the teasing about being made obsolete with other jobs eclipsing their role would have made sense! My two top jobs are both jobs that have become next to useless in abyssea and it's very depressing at times.

Absolutely loved this game until I eventually burnt out on it. I bought it on launch here in the U.K and played up until maybe level 60 ish and just got fed up of the slow leveling process. A few people I played with had dabbled in WOW and were leveling like crazy and always seeing new stuff, whereas with FFXI I was going to the same spot with friends every night trying to reach that next - seemingly distant - level.
It was the first and only MMO I have ever played (can't stand the graphical style of WOW) and the time I had with it was amazing and I met a great group of friends who I still speak to via gaming forums. No other game has ever had me giddy for the evening to arrive so I could jump onto my P.C.
Slim I know, but in case anyone did bump into me back then, my name was Bungle and I was a Taru white mage. I was on the Garuda server which I believe has now closed down/merged?
I've been on Titan since release, and soon it won't even exist anymore once it merges with Phoenix, which kinda bums me out. I had friends from high school who played on Shiva and Ramuh, but never knew anyone on Garuda.

I've been curious about FF XI, but right now paying a subscription doesn't work for me. I just don't have the time for it. Maybe once the semester ends I can at least give the demo a shot.
Any suggestions for a complete noob?
For semi-soloing as a noob, I think a Hume or Galka Warrior in Bastok would work best, since you'll have a good starting accessory and easy availability of job-based gear. Warrior is a decent solo-job for the beginning part of the game. I personally found it easy with a Elvaan White Mage.
I've re-started as a Mithra RDM, which while I love is also kind of expensive due to the variety of magic in both main and subjobs. I'm going to second Clix in that a physical class (WAR/THF/MNK) might be simpler to start unless you have someone to seed you some gil and/or escorts to Jeuno.
and if anyone is starting out and looking for a server i suggest quetzacotl or alexander. most of the rpgamer folk play on alexander.
