Today's episode contains two acts. In the first, memories are cast back to a series that almost singlehandedly started the console JRPG. In the second, one of BioWare's best-known games is given plentiful discourse.

The episode title had my hopes up thinking you'd talk about the other series that helped start the JRPG genre. Two years before Dragon Quest.

I'm still pretty inexperience with the Dragon Quest series. I've only recent beaten the DS remake of the fourth game. I'm waiting to see if that Wii collection will be coming over here or not before I start buying the GBC versions off of eBay.
Random related fact: While Dragon Warrior/Quest 1 was the first JRPG ever and came to the US before Final Fantasy, the first JRPG in the US was actually the original Phantasy Star. It came out sometime in 1988.
Another random, not quite as related fact: That's not "Old English" in Dragon Quest. That's Ye Olde Butchered English. This is actual Old English, spoken in parts of what is now England between the 5th and 12th centuries AD.
And actaully, Baldur's Gate 2 sounds like a game I'd enjoy. Maybe I should buy it off of GOG.
Oh yeah, and I rather like the new intro music.

I have no love for THAT game, definitely not. I'm also the only one around here who's played it, so don't expect a show in the future. I played the first few maps in the Saturn version on Falcom Classics, then got bored and never went back. My Falcom love is very conditional, and this game just didn't earn it.Great episode but...

To really get technical with it, that is more of the olde English when it was written when there where a lot of Danish spelling involved, there are some versions of old english that is more comprehensible, but where old English ends and middle English begins is a very technical debate.Originally Posted by Strawberry Eggs

Ah come on guys, no one finish these 3 olds games, we did have nothing more to plays back on those time!!
For Dragon Warrior two, it's was fun the way you have to get your ally, first the prince you have to search him in the cave only to find him back at the inn after you look for it! For the princess, she was turn into a dog, and you had to find to mirror of truth to change her back.
As the final Castle, there were a lot of boss to get rid of, and if you wanted to get out and heal yourself you have to redo all of these bosses, that was quite a challenging ending, lot of grinding again!!!
I really enjoyed the new intro! Glad this show is up to 50. Looking forward to 50 more. I still gotta listen to Saturn retro spective, but I plan on getting an playing Albert Odyssey first. Doubt I'll ever get Magic Knight Rayearth. To much $ for to little.
I'd love to see you guys do a retrospective on the old Spiderweb games. Playing those on the powermac was my intro to RPGs.
You talking about these Spiderweb games? http://www.spidweb.com/ . Problem would be none of us have played them...well, I played the demo of one for about a dozen hours (they are beefy demos!) I've been thinking about giving them a run, especially now that they have one on the iPad. These games are pretty hard core, and hard core RPGs are sorely lacking on that platform.

There is a staffer who loves Spiderweb games' which is Wheels.
Well, if he wants to come on and do a segment on those games, he's always welcome. Any staff member that wants to talk about an old game or three is welcome to record a segment . It can be done during the regular recording or just whenever I'm on skype. Alternatively, anyone (staff member or not) is welcome to record a short (2-5 minute) dissertation on any old (2+ years) RPG and email it to me. Fun times!

I've actually played though a fair bit of Exile/Avernum, but I don't have a lot to say about the experience. The games failed to spark my imagination and I don't remember much about them except pressing the attack button a lot.

I love Falcom, but their early games really aren't worth mentioning outside of Ys, which also wouldn't be worth mentioning if it hadn't been remade and polished a bunch of times.

I remember playing the original Exile trilogy quite a while back. I remember liking the setting and premise, though I was never very good at the games. I only really got anywhere in Exile III, and even then not that far (and only that far due to rampant cheating!). Maybe I should see if it is possible to give them another try, and see how they hold up.
You know I'm a graphics ho, Wheels. Or more accurately, I'm a graphics design ho, and that's never been Spiderweb's strong suit... but the story and gameplay failed to really inspire me, either. Not sure why. Maybe it was the bread.
