befriend (v.): to use mecha-class beam weaponry to inflict grievous bodily harm on a target in the process of proving the validity of your belief system.
Looks pretty, perhaps I'll give it a look when it comes out... if I'm not too busy playing Guild Wars 2.![]()

Interested to hear more about the Vita version and how comparable it may be. Mostly because I know my current laptop utterly fails to play games a quarter as pretty :P

I'm looking forward to this one, though I hope it gets a console release like the original did...
I like how they adapted the original PSO theme song for this. It looks much more action-oriented like PSU was, which is a good thing in my book. It was more interesting than picking a target and just mashing A. I'll have to do some investigation on the Japanese release to see if they kept in the dodge mechanic from Phantasy Star Zero because that was a good addition too.

I'll probably try this out when it comes, just to see if it's my thing.

For what it's worth, since the game's free-to-play and not region blocked, you can try it out now if you don't mind the moon runes. There are pretty useful guides detailing how to sign up, install the game client, and play the game available here: http://bumped.org/psublog/pso2-guide-list/
The game's a lot of fun, and I'm glad they've announced a localization, but unless Sega gives some kind of indication that they're going to manage the American release better than the previous PS games, I'll probably just keep playing on the Japanese servers.
I'm concerned about prolonged western support as well. Even for their buy/subscription games, PSO V2/EP1&2/BlueBurst and PSU, Sega never really put much effort into extra content outside Japan. I wonder if that will continue to be the case here.

My cousin and I played it today. Fairly decent experience, but even with the guide things can get confusing to figure out in game. We are level 7 I think, and have just started doing some the client paper quests. Not really sure what the goals are for any of them outside of the mag acquisition, but I'm sure the information is in the guide. Gameplay is okay, and I like some of the added hunter weapons such as the dual whip claws, for example. Even though things are sped up, it still feels like typical PSO style combat, which could be good or bad depending on your view of the series. PSO2 also runs very smooth with an Xbox 360 controller, I'm happy not to have to use the keyboard for this one.
Hopefully we'll be able to get things down in a couple of days. My cousin just can't figure out how equip technics, for example. We also have no idea what Photon Burst does or how to activate it. Seemed like that was one of the goals of an earlier mission, too.
Glad to hear its getting an english release, at any rate.

That's a fair point I guess. I don't think I'm going to play it in japanese, I'll just wait until it comes out in English. I'm also not a fan of the "subscribe to be able to trade" thing, so hopefully that won't be a feature on the western release, but I bet that it will be.

For what it's worth, right now only forces can equip technics. You can either link them to your weapon (like photon arts for hunters) or put them on your sub-palette like items. You're probably also thinking of Photon Sensitive Effects (PSEs) and PSE Bursts; when players kill monsters very quickly, it causes the PSE levels in an area to go up. When the PSE levels reach 9, there's a random chance of a PSE Burst activating, which causes tons of monsters to start spawning in waves, and they'll keep coming as long as you kill them quickly enough. It seems to happen most easily if you're in a multi-party area with lots of other players (not NPCs) who are working together.
well now I have something more to play next year....I've never played PSO tho

My VAPS Entry,
Thanks, that helps us Minneyar. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure other classes as long as they weren't Casts could equip technics in previous games. Since I am a Cast, I couldn't help him at all with it. And yes, I was thinking of the PSE effects. Thats one less thing to worry about trying to figure out!

No problem. Yeah, in the original PSO games, techs were limited by race, and any non-cast could use them, although specific techs and levels were restricted based on race & gender. Currently in PSO2, they're not limited by race, but only forces can use them. Sega has announced already that an update this fall will add three new classes, and people are speculated that there will be some kind of sub-class system based on certain elements in the UI and screenshots from early in development, so it will probably eventually be possible for non-forces to use techs.
The stat differences in races are actually very minor this time around, so it's perfectly viable for even a male cast to be a decent force.
So is sega charging a subscription fee like the rest?
