    Staff Retroview - Study Quest: Adventures on Math Island

    It's all about the numbers, one-two-three. Decimals, fractions, you will see. But a game based on such, how would that be? The results aren't much to play with glee.

    Review.

    considering that your average jrpg is a giant math problem flanked by character portrait-based cutscenes wouldn't it be easier expose the underlying maths, leave the results blank, then require players to solve the problems for a bonus to the effect...

    i might be onto something here. to kickstarter!

    Depends on how complicated the damage formulae are. Have you seen some of the equations going on behind the SaGa games? o_O

    that's the genius. you can sell different games at different math levels ranging from dragon quest-ish basic math game up through to the saga series.

    Heh, the basic damage formula for RS2 goes something like this:

    damage = base value * tech power + e - defense*5

    base value = [( max(weapon power - defense, 1)*(100 - Lv*2 + C*8 ) + C*(99 - weapon + 12*MAX(relevant ability score-10,0) )/64 ]

    C = specific weapon type value

    If an idea renders a game even more inscrutable than the innards of Unlimited Saga, then it's probably a BAD IDEA.
