RPGCast - Episode 301: "Mare Mayor"

Equines, epochs, set-top boxes, and hacking toddlers round out a really weird week. And as if April Fool's wasn't enough, Amazon announced a video game console. Well, not really, but really. It has a controller and everything. Except games, of course.

Actually, her name is "Mayor Mare." You had it reversed.

Me: "Dang, Masterchief pwned you in pony knowledge."

Chris: "But...Mayor Mare is a copyrighted name...Mare Mayor isn't...so I can freely use it!"

Me: "You are just so full of s***"

Haha. I could totally see that happening.

Small mistake in my segment. I sad it comes from the Greek word epecho. It doesn't. It comes from the Greek word epoche.
Here it is in video form: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5It...31X6Swj9iShv4p

Lots of interesting RPG news this episode. I heard the same thing as Emanuel. That PS3 game will be streamed but PS1 and PS2 games will be downloads AND I heard that they may put an emulator that makes them look beautiful like an emulator on PC does. Have you ever seen a 3D PS1 game on an emulator? It looks really nice. Have you ever seen a PS2 game on an emulator? It looks AMAZING! Just search for gameplay footage of Dragon Quest VIII, Valkyrie Profile 2, or Final Fantasy XII on an emulator and be reduced to tears at the beauty of it! IF Sony does do something as awesome as having the entire PS1 and PS2 library on a high-quality emulator that runs smoothly on the PS4, it will be the greatest thing ever to happen to any console ever.

What makes me happy this week? I've been doing a lot of driving this week and the podcast was 10 minutes too short for my commute to work today, so I've been filling the extra space (and other days) with Steam Powered Giraffe songs. They're a band started by two members who were trained as mimes and decided to break their vow of silence, dress up like steampunk robots, and sing interesting songs. Sare's partial to their cover of Rihanna's song Diamonds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU-VJOzb-10), but if you're new to their music I'd suggest Brass Goggles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDRHx4cPgbE) or Automatonic Electronic Harmonics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQWY-JOhF2I). They cover several genres, but they don't have music videos for some of my favourite songs online.

I have an HTC One (about a year old now). I do enjoy it a LOT. I did pay a pretty penny for it...but for something I use everyday (more than even my iPad), it is worth it. It does have nice speakers...for a cell phone. Granted, it's not as good as any independent speaker...but for a cell phone dealie, it's loud (if I want it to be), which has been a major plus for me. I don't think the HTC does anything revolutionary, but everything is done on it very well. The screen is excellent, super bright, awesome battery life, it moves fast, great camera and much more.

As a person who has both console and computer... You're right, Chris. Console graphics, while improving, still can't compete with computer graphic prowess. But, given it's about 1/4th the price, I wouldn't expect it to. I do believe that for their price, the newest consoles do a really great job.

I saw that Zelda you mentioned. It's nice. It's not $350 nice :P I will check out Plastic Kitty, as I do have a small, but growing collection of Video Game "Action Figures" (I have to put that in quotes, as my wife keeps calling them "Dolls."

Manny, I have not heard that PS4 can play PS2, except streaming through their upcoming service. My interest in that is very low because I have such a massive PS2 (and PS3) collection, and I have no intention of buying all of those games again. (And, chances are, they won't offer all the ones I already own). So, yeah...I'm keeping the phat, BC compatible one.

In listening to the Kickstarter story...I didn't quite get all of it...but I think that paying to play a Beta is just silly. Silly, I say! But, it's is a free marketplace...so if people want to (and clearly they do), who am I to stop them?

There's still time left in the week for something else to make me happy, but otherwise, I enjoyed completing Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean again, only the second time since I bought it back in 2006.

Now there's a game that deserves an HD remaster. Its environments are so beautiful and inventive!

    Is too weaks to podcast!

    Bravely Default:
Being in in the middle of the second half, I'm still trying to think of recommendations to help Chris through it.
The obvious one is to skip the sidequests, however I liked the snippets of story you get with most of those. (Will probably be fairly quick to zoom through the fights on Easy too.)

Otherwise it's a really good idea to beat the vampire before you leave chapter 4. Maybe after you have all the support slots? (It's a bit like how a Blue Mage will find easy monsters are hard to find later on).

    P.S.
    Mare Mayor, under war!
    Hooves the Ferris, won awful?

Couldn't agree more. The card battle system was so neat, too.

I would rather have a third game, personally, combing the card systems from both games. I suppose that would disqualify from the Year of On Hit Wonders, but of course, I'm speaking hypothetically.

I hope I'm replying to the right podcast but what is making me happy is... No surprise, Diablo 3 + Reaper of Souls, I've switched from Path of Exiles to Blizzard crack.
2nd thing making me happy is "Log Horizon" anime, even though I have no time to play MMORPG's, this anime has me hooked. Based on players who are trapped in a fantasy MMORPG (a la Hacksign, Swordart online) is a mix of typical Japanese wierdness and slapstick mixed with serious evolving politics and philosophically interesting social issues.
